Extra-Curricular Activities
Students are encouraged to become involved with a wide range of clubs and societies, which meet at lunchtimes and after school; there are chances to get together at weekends and during school holidays as well. The following list of activities may well have been supplemented by next year, as we are constantly looking for opportunities to extend school life beyond the classroom.

Activities and Visits
Year Heads and other staff will organise social and educational events for students. There are visits to educational centre's, theatres and theme parks as well as activity holidays both in England and abroad, including skiing and water sports. Exchanges and residential visits to Europe develop skills in Modern Languages and extend the History curriculum; field and study trips in England are part of the Science and Geography programme's. We operate an exchange visit to Thailand in the Sixth Form.
Sports at Thurstable
We follow a policy of sports for all, in the belief that healthy competition, skills building and teamwork are integral to a good education. All interested individuals have the opportunity to join clubs at either a competitive or a recreational level.
For the most talented girls and boys there is a wide range of teams, which enjoy exceptional success, based on skill, enthusiasm and fitness. The school has been awarded Sports College Status from 2002 and Sportsmark status in 1999, 2005 & 2008 and has excellent connections with local sports clubs.
Sports Clubs for boys and girls of all ages meet at lunchtimes and after school for the following activities: Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Dance, Football, Fitness, Girls Club, Gymnastics, Hockey, Netball, Rounder's, Rugby, Table tennis, Tennis, Trampolining, Squash, Rock Climbing and Sports Leaders Awards.
Squash and racketball courts may be booked and there are also programme's of revision classes, winter athletics training and dance. For those who enjoy quieter activities at lunchtime the library is open, in addition to chess and games clubs and many more.
Creative Arts
There are good facilities for Art, Music and Drama at Thurstable: creative skills are a strength of the School and pupils meet at lunchtimes and after school to rehearse and prepare work for performance and display. There are many opportunities to take part in plays, musicals, talent shows and concerts throughout the year; both the Main Hall and Drama Studio are equipped with lighting and sound equipment that permits either large scale or intimate productions. The Art Department also has facilities to support the study of photography, including a dark room.
Theatre visits are organised by the Drama Department and there are close ties between the Art Department and local artists; visits to London galleries are an important feature of the syllabus from Key Stage 3 upwards and A Level students experience Life Drawing Workshops.
There are links between the Drama Department and local companies, such as the Mercury Theatre. Professional musicians and visiting instrumental teachers work closely with our staff and students to extend the range of the curriculum and assist with all stages of performances: there are many ensemble groups that rehearse and perform throughout the year and the Thurstable Singers perform regularly in and out of School.
We offer free tuition in orchestral instruments to students prepared to commit to regular rehearsal and performance. An application form can be obtained from the Music Department.
INSTRUMENTAL LESSONS
As part of Thurstable School’s Music department, we are fortunate enough to have a team of visiting instrumental teachers, who come to the School on a weekly basis and can offer tuition in:
• Drum Kit
• Woodwind
• Keyboard/Piano
• Guitar (Electronic and Acoustic)
• Brass
• Strings
• Voice
The fees for one term (10 lessons) are: 15 minutes per week £51.
There are subsidies available for families receiving income support or family credit and more information about this can be obtained from the Music Department. If you have two children learning, then the second child is half price.
Invoices will be sent out at the beginning of each term and should you wish to cancel lessons we ask that you notify the School in writing at the end of a term. All payments should be returned to the Finance Office or the Music Department.
For enquiries regarding booking lessons, please contact The Music Department.
Thurstable 50 Musical Scholarships
The purpose of the Thurstable 50 Musical Scholarships is to increase the opportunities for students to learn an orchestral musical instrument (woodwind, brass or strings) and to ensure that our musicians have rich opportunities to demonstrate their accomplishment in performance. There are 50 places on the scheme, and students who are interested should apply to the Music Department.
Tuition is provided free of charge on a weekly basis, and students are expected to attend a weekly ensemble as part of their Scholarship contract. Commitment to the scheme is yearly, and will be offered as long as the student wishes to learn. Lessons take place during the school day, and are rotated to ensure students do not miss the same lesson each week.
